{Raleigh NC Newborn Photographer} 5 Things I want new moms to know

September 05, 2017  •  Leave a Comment

I have been photographing newborn babies and families in the Raleigh area for almost 5 years now (wahoo, I'll have to come up with a way to celebrate this October!).  I've learned so much about becoming a new mom and all of the fears, discomforts, and concerns that go with it.  There are so many things I wish I had the guts to say with my clients who are new moms and are bringing their brand new babies in for their portrait session.  Today, I'd like to share a few of these thoughts I've had over the years.  Maybe they will help put you at ease.

1.  My studio is a judgement free zone.  It breaks my heart that I've had clients apologize for nursing their baby in front of me or apologize for feeding their baby formula instead of nursing.  Whatever choices you make for your little one, I support you 100%.  I have two kids of my own.  I've been in the trenches of parenting and I know that it's not easy.  We moms can feel so much judgement and guilt for our choices, but in my studio, you'll find none of it.  You are free to nurse your baby in my studio, as much as it's needed.  You can use a cover...or not.  I absolutely will not be offended in the slightest.  Nursing a baby is a beautiful thing and I welcome you do to it during your baby's photography session.  You can feed your baby from a bottle here too.  I believe that babies who are fed formula are just as healthy as the rest of them and I support your decision to feed your baby however you like.

2.  There is nothing that can happen during your baby's newborn session that you should feel embarrassed about.  Whether it's leaky boobs, your baby pooping all over me, or anything else, please don't be embarrassed.  I've seen and experienced it all.  You just created a human being, for goodness sakes.  You are a super hero!  You get a free pass for anything embarrasssing that can happen to you here (for the rest of your life).

3.  Please be in some photographs with your new baby.  You may not feel like it right now, but you are BEAUTIFUL.  I promise you.  All the sleep deprivation in the world cannot distract from the glow you have as a mom to a brand new baby.  The love for that tiny baby shows in your smiles, kisses, and adoring look you give your baby.  Please let me capture that love in your new family.  Don't let this moment pass without being in at least a few shots with your baby.

4.  Don't panic if your baby is fussy.  There is a reason that I plan for newborn sessions taking 3 hours.  Most of the time is not spent actually photographing the baby.  Newborn babies have their own agenda.  They need time to eat, change diapers, be cuddled, soothed, and rocked to sleep. Sometimes, a baby who is especially fussy leaves a family wondering if we got enough great portraits.  We are both always pleasantly surprised at how the photos turn out.  Almost all babies will settle and be content for a little bit of the session, and it's usually plenty of time to work quickly and capture some beautiful portraits.  In my 5 years of newborn photography, I can only remember one or two newborn sessions where we had to reschedule because the baby was having a bad day.

5. Your baby is safe here.  I wrote a blog post recently about all the precautions I take to keep your little one safe, but if you missed it, you can read it here.  I take safety very seriously.  I stay up to date on my immunizations.  My studio is a room in my home, so I make extra sure to stay on top of cleanliness. I clean the studio after every session and keep the door closed.  My family does not go in there.  I even run an air purifier in my home to help keep the air clean.  Luckily, now that my children are a little older (6 and 8), they don't get sick often like toddlers do.  But if they or I get sick and you have a session scheduled here, I will let you know and we'll reschedule.

I am passionate about brand new babies and their families.  Each and every little baby that comes to my studio is treasured.  Being a newborn photographer isn't only about capturing special moments, but also about building relationships and seeing a family through their journey, creating memories along the way.  If you are interested in newborn photography for your little one, but have questions, you can get in touch with me here.  I'll answer any questions you have.  I serve families all over the Triangle.  My studio is in Fuquay Varina, but I have families come to me from Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Apex, and Holly Springs.
