{Raleigh NC Newborn Photography} A Sample Gallery From a Newborn Portrait Session

I thought it would be fun to show an entire gallery from a newborn photography session.  With newborn sessions, each family receives a proofing gallery of 25-35 images to view after the session.  The proofs are emailed to the family in a link where they are uploaded to an online gallery for viewing.  There are four different package choices for newborn sessions.  With the smallest one, the family narrows down the gallery to their favorite five.  Obviously, this is a hard task and this package is rarely chosen.  The next package includes the family's favorite 10 images.  This package is more popular.  The third package, and by far the most popular, includes all of the image, the entire collection of 25-35 images.  The fourth package includes everything that the third package has but also a large canvas.  All packages also include a set of prints and birth announcements, as well as a print release.

The session I am sharing today is of a family that came to my studio in Fuquay Varina with their brand new baby girl.  Like most newborn photography sessions, we started this one with family poses.  I try to do at least a few of the whole family (sometimes there are older siblings, but for this family, the baby was their first).  I also want to get a few of Mom with the baby and a few of Dad with the baby.  These family portraits usually take up somewhere between 5-10 images in the gallery, depending on what the family requests.

I do the family portraits at the beginning of the session for a reason.  First of all, if there are older siblings, especially, it's nice to have the family pictures done early while they are still fresh in their outfit and interested in the photography session.  The other reason is that the room stays very warm.  Newborn babies love the warmth, but it makes everyone else a little uncomfortable.  If we waited until the end of the session to do family portraits, there's a good chance that everyone would be hot and sweaty.

After family portraits, I usually move on to using a fur or flokati.  These come in a variety of colors and they create a really pretty texture in photographs.  For a lot of sessions, I start with what I call the "sack of potatoes" pose.  This involves swaddling a baby snuggly in multiple fabrics.  We place baby on the flokati and an adult holds her up, so she can't tip over (I later edit out the mom or dad's hands).  For some reason, babies love this pose and it almost always gets them to relax and fall asleep.  After that, I unwrap them until they are left wrapped up in just one piece of fabric.  We take a few more shots on the flokati.

After this, we usually do some poses on the bean bag, in a few different colors.  When families first book, I either talk with them over the phone or email them a questionnaire to find out what colors they prefer.  I then pick those colors and layer them onto the bean bag.  I then do a few different poses and angles on each color.  For this session, we started with a really pretty pastel orchid color.

Next, we moved on to a beautiful and dainty pale pink color.  I love the texture of this blanket.  It goes so nicely with all babies.

Lastly, we used a pretty minty sage shade of green.

I try very hard to get a lot of variety in newborn sessions.  The goal is to capture every little detail of their adorable little selves.  This sweet baby girl had such long eye lashes, dainty little fingers, and soft head of hair.  Within weeks, babies look so different.  It's important to remember what they were like when they were so brand new.

Almost every session ends with poses done in a bowl or basket on wooden backdrops.
