I've been wanting to write this blog post for a few weeks, ever since a recent newborn portrait session in Raleigh where I was talking to a client about how I make almost all the props in my portraits and she commented that she didn't know any other photographers that do that.  Take a minute to think of all the friends you have who are photographers or want to be photographers.  I wouldn't be surprised if you counted at least five, depending on where you live.  I am a member of a few Facebook groups for Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, and Fuquay Varina moms.  Any time someone asks for recommendations for a newborn photographer, there are easily 50 comments made.  As a photographer, as with any business owner, I have to find ways to set myself apart from the hundreds of other photographers in my area.  I thought it would be a good idea to spell it out, really give a clear explanation of what is different about my photography.

1.  All of the packages that I offer include both digital files and professional quality prints.  I don't know of any other photographers that offer both.  Most either give you a CD or USB with only digital files or they do not include digital files at all and you have to purchase prints (or you can buy digital files a la carte at a very high price).  Why do my packages include both?  I believe both are important.  Whenever I make a decision for my business, I think to myself, "what would I want if I were the customer?"  I often ask my friends the same thing to get their feedback.  Almost everyone wants digital files of their portraits.  This makes sense.  You want to have a digital back up of your images.  You want to be able to view them on your devices, share them easily with family, and make your own prints throughout the years.  Many families think they don't need to purchase prints or don't feel that having both from the photographer is important.  My years of experience in newborn and family photography have told me that most families who only get digital files never get around to printing those images.  Having a new baby in the family is such an adjustment.  Many families just won't find the time to get photos printed.  Some do, but of those, many wait months.  If you are investing in portraits of your family or newborn baby, don't you want to enjoy them right away?  It is wonderful to enjoy the photos on devices, but trust me, it is such a joyful feeling to walk down your hallway or over your mantle and see portraits hanging on your walls of your beautiful children.  This is also the reason why all newborn packages include 25 birth announcements.  When you are sleep-deprived from taking care of your new baby, it's nice to get all the help you can get.  Let me take care of your birth announcements.  I have hundreds of templates to choose from.  I'll design them (with your input, of course), order them, and get them to you quickly.  My announcements are printed beautifully too.  I love the feel of the thick card stock and the rich colors.  I include prints not only for your convenience, but also because I want you to see how a well-done print should look.  Your portraits are artwork, and prints from the drug store down the street will not show them nearly as well or hold color as long as a professional lab.

2.  I do all newborn portrait sessions at clients' homes.  This is a really nice feature and I've had clients tell me that they specifically searched for a photographer who traveled.  Having a studio has its benefits, and I'm hoping to have one someday, but even when I do, I will always offer at home sessions as a service.  At home sessions are such a nice option right after having a baby.  When I had c sections with my two boys, even things like climbing into a car took a deal of effort and pain.  You may also be concerned with germs or there may be parts of your home that you'd like photographed, such as the nursery.  When I come to your house, you can dress in pajamas if you want to, use the time to take a nap, or just relax.  I had a newborn portrait session recently where the grandma and I worked through the session and the mom took a break to pump.  It is nice for me to have someone to help with the baby during the session, so it's really nice to have a husband, grandma, auntie, or anyone else over who wouldn't mind occasionally snuggling a baby.

3.  Almost all of the props I use during your newborn portrait session are handmade by me and are truly unique.   I love doing this for my clients.  Did you know with just about every session, I make a new item to use so that your portraits are unique and creative?  I've found that store bought headbands and hats are often too big for newborns, even if they are newborn sized.  I think this is because they are made to last several weeks.  Since I only use my hats on babies that are only a few weeks old, I make them small.  They fit snugly and don't swallow up the baby.  I taught myself how to knit when I first started my business and since then, almost every little hat that I bring to newborn sessions is made by me.  I am always learning new stitches and I love picking out high-end luxuriously soft yarns, like angora, mohair, and merino. I have all kinds of colors and patterns for hats and headbands.  If you see something you like on my website, just ask me, and I can probably bring it.  I make sure to ask all families if there are any particular colors they love.  With that information, I can make sure I have props and blankets that match your style.  Most of my clients love neutral colors and so do I.  Babies look beautiful on white, cream, tan, brown, and gray and these colors are so easy to decorate with.  A framed portrait will look good in any room.  I do love color, though especially pastels and earth tones.  Below is a cream colored bonnet I knit in a delicate stitch with angora yarn, a heavenly soft fiber.

4.  I offer outdoor newborn portrait sessions.  I absolutely love that I started offering this service last year.  Although outdoor newborn photography is gaining popularity in other parts of the country and the world, there are very few photographers in North Carolina who will do an entire session outdoors.  Some will offer a pose or two outside of their studio, but I have the ability to conduct an entire newborn portrait session outdoors.  What's more, I have a list of the best spots in the Triangle area that I've found for doing these sessions.  Quite a few of them are little tucked away spaces with beautiful features for photography.  Outdoor newborn sessions are so much fun.  I can offer these during the warm months, typically from April or May through October.  Outdoor newborn photography is so special because the focus is still on your beautiful baby, but you also get to capture the beauty of nature.  Below are a few examples from last summer.

This baby looks so comfortable on a warm summer evening, resting among some zinnias.  This session was done in a private garden that I have access to.

This baby was photographed in April.  Some days in April are warm enough and some aren't.  In this session, I had to bundle him up a little bit in the shade.

This little guy was photographed even earlier in the year, when the pear trees were blossoming.  He was kept nice and bundled on this cool afternoon.

This little boy was photographed at a very popular local park in Cary, just a few feet off the jogging trail.  Outdoor newborn photography is all about finding beautiful spots that are easily accessible.

5.  I work my hardest to best meet the needs of your family.  Sometimes you will find that photographers limit who can participate in a photography session.  For example, many charge more for parents or siblings to be photographed during a newborn session.  Others charge more for extended family to join a family session.  Others even charge extra if you have twins!  I never do this.  You are welcome to have yourself, your children, your parents, your uncle, even the family dog photographed during any session.  In fact, I encourage this.  I absolutely love newborn sessions where grandparents are present and want to be in a few portraits with the new baby.  There is nothing quite as much fun as cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents getting together to celebrate an anniversary with family portraits.  This family was so much fun to photograph.  The grandpa reminded me so much of my own dad, full of humor and personality.

Don't forget your furry family members.  They are always welcome too!
