I don't often book senior portrait sessions because my specialty is newborn photography, but it's always nice to change it up and do something different.  In a lot of ways, senior portraits are a lot easier than newborn babies.  You can't dress them up in cute outfits or put little knit hats on their heads, though...

Anyway, I thought I would do something different with this blog post.  Instead of showing photos individually, I thought I'd put them in a slide show to share.  Check out this wonderful family celebrating their son's awesome accomplishment.

{Raleigh NC Newborn Photographer} A Very Special Baby Boy http://www.ericacourtinephotography.com/blog/2017/11/-raleigh-nc-newborn-photographer-a-very-special-baby-boy This was a very special newborn photography session, for a few reasons.  First of all, this wonderful family is near and dear to our hearts.  You see, this little boy's mama has been both of my boys' first grade teacher.  Our first son was in her class last year and this year, our younger son is lucky enough to have her as a teacher too.  It was such an honor to meet little Myles, a long awaited baby.  He was such a dream to work with.  Not only was he cute as can be, but he was so laid back.  I'm not sure if I ever saw him awake.  I think he slept the entire time, completely content with me taking pictures of him.  I got so many beautiful portraits of him and we still finished early.

I normally don't show black and white photos on my website or blog, but I thought it would be fun to share what some look like in black and white.  They can be just as beautiful.  I most often prefer color, but with the shadowing, both are so nice to have.

This daddy was such a champ at holding his little boy.  Little Myles is so comfy sleeping in daddy's arms.

This pose below is one I often start the baby portraits with, once family portraits are finished.  For whatever reason, babies love being wrapped up like this. The little smile just melts your heart.

Funny story.  This baby boy's nursery is decorated with a "Where the Wild Things Are" theme.  Months ago, Mama ordered a crown and a few other props to do go with the newborn photo session.  For some reason, the order was never delivered.  I felt badly that they didn't have the props they wanted for the session, so I decided to try to make something myself.  I created this furry crown to use during the session.  Truth be told- I tried making a little monster stuffie too, but that thing didn't come out quite right and looked way too creepy to give a baby.

Anyway, I added a quote from the book to this cute little pose with Myles wearing the crown.

{Raleigh NC Baby Photography} A Milestone Mini-Session with a Three Month Old http://www.ericacourtinephotography.com/blog/2017/10/-raleigh-nc-baby-photography-a-milestone-mini-session-with-a-three-month-old I have a confession to make.  Up until recently, I hadn't really found my groove when it came to three month old babies and photography.  I've photographed several over the years but struggled with poses.  They don't stay asleep like a newborn and they can't sit up like a 6-7 month old.  Three month olds can't really do much...or so I thought.  Then I met this adorable little guy who changed everything.  Unlike most other three month olds I'd met, this guy LOVED being on his tummy and he could hold up his head really well.  Also, he was very smily.  Most babies I've photographed at this age are able to smile, but don't smile very often.  This boy was such a ham and smiled and babbled at me the entire time.  He was so friendly and animated.  I discovered a few new poses for 3 month olds.  If you missed out on newborn portraits for whatever reason, doing a session at three months old is a great alternative.  Take a look at this handsome little baby's mini-session.

{Raleigh NC Newborn Photography} Neutral Colors and a Baby Girl http://www.ericacourtinephotography.com/blog/2017/10/-raleigh-nc-newborn-photography-neutral-colors-and-a-baby-girl The theme of this photography session was neutral.  I loved that parents requested neutral colors and not a lot of headbands and hats on their baby girl.  They wanted the focus to be on their beautiful little girl.

Although I normally do use props, like headbands, hats, and outfits, I love keeping it simple and timeless.  Newborn portraits that have too many props tend to look outdated quickly and can't be enjoyed for generations.  Do you know anyone who got in on the Glamour Shots trend back in the 80s and 90s?  Case in point.  Are they still displaying their photographs?  Probably not.  More likely, they are hidden away and only pulled out for a good laugh.  Ten years from now, giant flowery headbands and crazy crochet hats will be out of style, so let's not include them in your baby's photography session if you want to enjoy these photographs years from now.  Keep it simple and beautiful.  That's my motto.

This family was adorable and this baby girl is clearly cherished.  Take a look at how we were able to use neutral colors and simplicity to really celebrate the baby and not props.

{Raleigh NC Newborn Photography} And Baby Makes Three http://www.ericacourtinephotography.com/blog/2017/10/-raleigh-nc-newborn-photography-and-baby-makes-three I met this family at my studio outside of Raleigh recently and they had the most beautiful little baby boy.  He was so cute.  He spent a lot of his photography session sleeping, but was also alert for a bit of it.  He was so calm and looked right at the camera, which is always adorable.  Some of my favorite portraits of newborn babies are ones where they have their eyes open.

You could tell just how loved this tiny baby boy was.  His mom and dad loved snuggling with him for pictures.  He loved sleeping soundly in daddy's arms too.

{Raleigh NC Baby Photographer} A Baby Milestone Session at 9 Months http://www.ericacourtinephotography.com/blog/2017/10/-raleigh-nc-baby-photographer-a-baby-milestone-session-at-9-months I've really been enjoying these new baby milestone sessions I've been offering and so have the families that book them.  At only 20 minutes long, they are easy to fit in between nap times.  They are a nice, stress-free way to get some updated portraits of your baby as she grows throughout the first year.  Most families choose to capture stages like tummy time (3-4 months), sitting up (6-9 months) and standing up (9-12 months).  These milestone mini-sessions are only for babies 12 months and younger.  Take a look at this little cutie that came in at 9 months old.  I've been photographing her every few months since her newborn session.

{Raleigh NC Newborn Photography} A Sample Gallery From a Newborn Portrait Session http://www.ericacourtinephotography.com/blog/2017/10/-raleigh-nc-newborn-photography-a-sample-gallery-from-a-newborn-portrait-session I thought it would be fun to show an entire gallery from a newborn photography session.  With newborn sessions, each family receives a proofing gallery of 25-35 images to view after the session.  The proofs are emailed to the family in a link where they are uploaded to an online gallery for viewing.  There are four different package choices for newborn sessions.  With the smallest one, the family narrows down the gallery to their favorite five.  Obviously, this is a hard task and this package is rarely chosen.  The next package includes the family's favorite 10 images.  This package is more popular.  The third package, and by far the most popular, includes all of the image, the entire collection of 25-35 images.  The fourth package includes everything that the third package has but also a large canvas.  All packages also include a set of prints and birth announcements, as well as a print release.

The session I am sharing today is of a family that came to my studio in Fuquay Varina with their brand new baby girl.  Like most newborn photography sessions, we started this one with family poses.  I try to do at least a few of the whole family (sometimes there are older siblings, but for this family, the baby was their first).  I also want to get a few of Mom with the baby and a few of Dad with the baby.  These family portraits usually take up somewhere between 5-10 images in the gallery, depending on what the family requests.

I do the family portraits at the beginning of the session for a reason.  First of all, if there are older siblings, especially, it's nice to have the family pictures done early while they are still fresh in their outfit and interested in the photography session.  The other reason is that the room stays very warm.  Newborn babies love the warmth, but it makes everyone else a little uncomfortable.  If we waited until the end of the session to do family portraits, there's a good chance that everyone would be hot and sweaty.

After family portraits, I usually move on to using a fur or flokati.  These come in a variety of colors and they create a really pretty texture in photographs.  For a lot of sessions, I start with what I call the "sack of potatoes" pose.  This involves swaddling a baby snuggly in multiple fabrics.  We place baby on the flokati and an adult holds her up, so she can't tip over (I later edit out the mom or dad's hands).  For some reason, babies love this pose and it almost always gets them to relax and fall asleep.  After that, I unwrap them until they are left wrapped up in just one piece of fabric.  We take a few more shots on the flokati.

After this, we usually do some poses on the bean bag, in a few different colors.  When families first book, I either talk with them over the phone or email them a questionnaire to find out what colors they prefer.  I then pick those colors and layer them onto the bean bag.  I then do a few different poses and angles on each color.  For this session, we started with a really pretty pastel orchid color.

Next, we moved on to a beautiful and dainty pale pink color.  I love the texture of this blanket.  It goes so nicely with all babies.

Lastly, we used a pretty minty sage shade of green.

I try very hard to get a lot of variety in newborn sessions.  The goal is to capture every little detail of their adorable little selves.  This sweet baby girl had such long eye lashes, dainty little fingers, and soft head of hair.  Within weeks, babies look so different.  It's important to remember what they were like when they were so brand new.

Almost every session ends with poses done in a bowl or basket on wooden backdrops.

{Raleigh NC Newborn Photographer} 5 Things I want new moms to know http://www.ericacourtinephotography.com/blog/2017/9/-raleigh-nc-newborn-photographer-5-things-i-want-new-moms-to-know I have been photographing newborn babies and families in the Raleigh area for almost 5 years now (wahoo, I'll have to come up with a way to celebrate this October!).  I've learned so much about becoming a new mom and all of the fears, discomforts, and concerns that go with it.  There are so many things I wish I had the guts to say with my clients who are new moms and are bringing their brand new babies in for their portrait session.  Today, I'd like to share a few of these thoughts I've had over the years.  Maybe they will help put you at ease.

Raleigh newborn baby photographer shares 5 things that new moms should know.Raleigh newborn baby photographer shares 5 things that new moms should know.Raleigh newborn baby photographer shares 5 things that new moms should know.

1.  My studio is a judgement free zone.  It breaks my heart that I've had clients apologize for nursing their baby in front of me or apologize for feeding their baby formula instead of nursing.  Whatever choices you make for your little one, I support you 100%.  I have two kids of my own.  I've been in the trenches of parenting and I know that it's not easy.  We moms can feel so much judgement and guilt for our choices, but in my studio, you'll find none of it.  You are free to nurse your baby in my studio, as much as it's needed.  You can use a cover...or not.  I absolutely will not be offended in the slightest.  Nursing a baby is a beautiful thing and I welcome you do to it during your baby's photography session.  You can feed your baby from a bottle here too.  I believe that babies who are fed formula are just as healthy as the rest of them and I support your decision to feed your baby however you like.

2.  There is nothing that can happen during your baby's newborn session that you should feel embarrassed about.  Whether it's leaky boobs, your baby pooping all over me, or anything else, please don't be embarrassed.  I've seen and experienced it all.  You just created a human being, for goodness sakes.  You are a super hero!  You get a free pass for anything embarrasssing that can happen to you here (for the rest of your life).

3.  Please be in some photographs with your new baby.  You may not feel like it right now, but you are BEAUTIFUL.  I promise you.  All the sleep deprivation in the world cannot distract from the glow you have as a mom to a brand new baby.  The love for that tiny baby shows in your smiles, kisses, and adoring look you give your baby.  Please let me capture that love in your new family.  Don't let this moment pass without being in at least a few shots with your baby.

4.  Don't panic if your baby is fussy.  There is a reason that I plan for newborn sessions taking 3 hours.  Most of the time is not spent actually photographing the baby.  Newborn babies have their own agenda.  They need time to eat, change diapers, be cuddled, soothed, and rocked to sleep. Sometimes, a baby who is especially fussy leaves a family wondering if we got enough great portraits.  We are both always pleasantly surprised at how the photos turn out.  Almost all babies will settle and be content for a little bit of the session, and it's usually plenty of time to work quickly and capture some beautiful portraits.  In my 5 years of newborn photography, I can only remember one or two newborn sessions where we had to reschedule because the baby was having a bad day.

Raleigh cary apex holly springs nc newborn photography family portraitRaleigh cary apex holly springs nc newborn photography family portraitRaleigh cary apex holly springs nc newborn photography family portrait

5. Your baby is safe here.  I wrote a blog post recently about all the precautions I take to keep your little one safe, but if you missed it, you can read it here.  I take safety very seriously.  I stay up to date on my immunizations.  My studio is a room in my home, so I make extra sure to stay on top of cleanliness. I clean the studio after every session and keep the door closed.  My family does not go in there.  I even run an air purifier in my home to help keep the air clean.  Luckily, now that my children are a little older (6 and 8), they don't get sick often like toddlers do.  But if they or I get sick and you have a session scheduled here, I will let you know and we'll reschedule.

I am passionate about brand new babies and their families.  Each and every little baby that comes to my studio is treasured.  Being a newborn photographer isn't only about capturing special moments, but also about building relationships and seeing a family through their journey, creating memories along the way.  If you are interested in newborn photography for your little one, but have questions, you can get in touch with me here.  I'll answer any questions you have.  I serve families all over the Triangle.  My studio is in Fuquay Varina, but I have families come to me from Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Apex, and Holly Springs.

{Holly Springs NC Child Photographer} A Little Girl in Mommy's Wedding Dress http://www.ericacourtinephotography.com/blog/2017/9/-raleigh-holly-springs-nc-child-photographer I love when families come to me with really unique and fun ideas for their photography sessions.  I met a family up in Raleigh one time for a global homecoming, family members joining together from countries around the world.  On another occasion, I photographed an elaborately adorable cake smash session for twins with a "Where the Wild Things Are" theme.  On this evening at Sugg Farm in Holly Springs, I met this mom and her beautiful little 5 year old daughter for a special photography session.  The little girl would be photographed in her mom's wedding dress.  She brought all kinds of props, flowers, and family heirlooms.  It was such a beautiful evening and we had a fabulous time.  Take a look at this little girl's photography session.  She could definitely be a child model!

I really enjoyed doing this photography session.  It was so different from what I normally do.  Late summer can be such a beautiful time of year for photography.  There's something so timeless about the golden glow of the sun setting on a summer evening, just before the fireflies show up.

If you would like to plan a photography session for your child, please let me know how I can help.  I can help you plan every last detail, from the location, to outfits, and everything in between.  Click here to send me a message.

{Raleigh NC Family Photographer} Diapers for Houston http://www.ericacourtinephotography.com/blog/2017/8/-raleigh-nc-family-photographer-lets-help-houston We've all been seeing the devastation on the news caused by Hurricane Harvey over the last few days.  The flooding is destroying the city and leaving families fleeing from their homes.  While Houston may seem so far away for many of us, the fact is that the families affected by the hurricane are families just like yours.  Many have babies and young children.  And because disaster relief agencies can't always provide diapers and other necessities to the displaced families and their babies, it creates a need that you and I can help with.

One of the most beautiful things about owning my own business is that I can use it to help people.  Obviously, as a newborn photographer, babies are near and dear to my heart.  Can you imagine having to leave your home and not having enough clean diapers for your baby?  These babies are confused and scared.  A clean diaper is the least we can give to a little baby going through such a traumatic event.

The Texas Diaper Bank needs our help.  They don't just provide diapers to families.  They are also needing donations of wipes, formula, baby blankets, adult diapers, etc.  I want to encourage us all to do our part and support Houston while they recover.  Our country is strong, and we're in this as a team.  So let's get started!

To raise money for the Texas Diaper Bank, I would like to raffle off a full fall family portrait session with my most popular package, a $495 value.  The photography session I am raffling off is my 3rd package and includes:

-A 60 minute outdoor photography session

-A set of 25 full edited digital images and a print release

-A set of 10 beautiful, professional quality prints for you to enjoy in your home

Fall is a beautiful time of year to book a family portrait session anyway.  Why not win a session and support a great cause all at the same time?  And for my families who have already booked their session, don't let that stop you from entering the drawing.  If you win, your session fee will be refunded so you can use the prize session.

When I dream, I dream big.  My goal is to raise $1000 for the Texas Diaper Bank.  Let's blow this goal out of the water!  Imagine how many diapers and supplies they could buy with $1000!   Let's join together and support Houston today!

I'll run the raffle for one week.  Next Thursday, I'll close the raffle and notify the winner.  Every single penny collected for the raffle will go straight to the Texas Diaper Bank as quickly as I can possibly get it to them.

You can purchase your raffle tickets below.  Everything will be managed electronically and you will receive one entry per ticket that you purchase.  Feel free to change the quantity to purchase multiple tickets for multiple chances to win.

Thank you so much to everyone who supported the fundraiser.  We raised just under $600!  We'll be announcing the winner on my facebook page.

{Fuquay Varina Baby Photographer} A Milestone Mini-Session http://www.ericacourtinephotography.com/blog/2017/8/-fuquay-varina-baby-photographer-a-milestone-mini-session I love offering mini-sessions in my studio for babies.  I've been doing this since last winter and it's so much fun.  I really enjoy the chance to see the babies I photographed as newborns.  Most of my clients who use the milestone mini-sessions schedule them around 6 or 9 months old.  It's a great, affordable way to document the milestones in a baby's first year of life, such as holding up their head, smiling, sitting up, crawling, and standing.  The mini-sessions can only be scheduled for babies 12 months and younger due to the limited space in the studio.  More information on the mini-sessions can be found here

I've been photographing this little girl since she was born last October.  Her family signed up for the Baby's First Year package, which includes sessions at birth, 6 months, and 12 months.  They chose to add on a mini-session at 9 months.   Take a look at this little cutie, showing off her crawling skills!

{Raleigh Family Photographer} A Little Boy Turns One http://www.ericacourtinephotography.com/blog/2017/8/-raleigh-family-photographer-a-little-boy-turns-one They told me that their little boy was so serious.  "Don't be surprised if he doesn't smile," they said.  Children this age are unpredictable and sometimes a challenge to photograph.  It's a challenge I'm always up for.  One year olds are out to explore their world.  With their new ability to walk and climb, they can't be held back from exploring nature.  Every path, every field, every stick and rock is a wonder in their eyes.

I met this family at Sugg Farm in Holly Springs, just outside of Raleigh, NC.  We had beautiful weather that evening.  As the sun was setting, the lighting was perfect and created a nice soft glow for our portraits.  Although this sweet little boy took a few minutes to warm up to me, he quickly opened up and smiled and giggled the rest of the hour... except when we tried to take away the stick he had found.  He became quite attached to it and so it ended up in quite a few of our shots.

Sugg Farm is such a great place to take children for a photography session.  There are rarely any other people there and it's nice and safe and fun to explore for a little kid.

With fall coming up, I love to remind families in southern Wake County of Sugg Farm in Holly Springs.  It's a great park for photography sessions and it's so close to where many of my clients live.  It has such a unique look to it.  I look forward to meeting families here this fall.  If you are interested in booking a fall family photography session this fall, I would love to hear from you.  Let me help you plan out the family portraits that you dream about.  Click here and send me a message.  I would love to be your photographer this fall!

{Raleigh NC Newborn Photography} Twin Girls In-Home Session http://www.ericacourtinephotography.com/blog/2017/8/-raleigh-nc-newborn-photography-twin-girls-in-home-session I love photographing multiples.  I don't get the opportunity very often, maybe once or twice a year.  Oddly enough, all of the sets I had photographed before this set were twin boys.  I met this wonderful family at their home in Raleigh.  The girls were so adorable and petite, even though they were born right on time.  It was so much fun to see how different they were in personality.  Mom told me that Nora, shown below, was the calm, laid-back, easy baby.  She mostly slept and barely made a peep the whole time I was there.

Her sister, Ani, on the other hand, had some spunk and loved to be more alert and watchful.  She did fall asleep for quite a bit of the session, but she didn't appreciate being moved or handled.

Ani had quite a head of hair for a newborn baby.  Mom said that all of the babies born in the family (these girls have a big brother and sister) came with a head full of hair.  I loved that their mom loved keeping a very simple style with the girls.  We only used a few hats and headbands, and for the most part photographed the girls with a very simple style.

While I love the traditional little newborn poses that show off their cute little features, sometimes it's nice to photograph newborn babies more simply.  During this part of the session, we let the girls curl up in their own positions, relax, and move how they wanted.

Big brother and sister were busy as can be during their little sisters' photography session.  They looked on quietly and came and went to play with their toys and eat lunch.  When it was their turn to pose with their sisters, we used a spare bed in the home.  These siblings were so little themselves, but they did such a great job holding their sisters.

My past experience with twins had been that they tend to calm down quickly when they are placed together.  Not true for these girls.  They wanted their space and didn't always want to pose together.  Here they are swaddled and relaxing together for a few minutes before one of them woke up.

A portion of the girls' newborn photography session was done outdoors at a Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh.  This beautiful garden near the fairgrounds was in full bloom.  We immediately found a beautiful patch of echinacea.

This newborn photo session was so much fun.  Everything, from the beautifully simple colors and poses to the more vibrant portraits done in the garden, came together so nicely.

{Raleigh Newborn Photography} Keeping Your Baby Safe During Photography Session http://www.ericacourtinephotography.com/blog/2017/8/-raleigh-newborn-photography-keeping-your-baby-safe-during-photography-session Keeping your baby safe during a newborn photography session raleigh cary apex holly springs fuquay varina nc newborn photographersKeeping your baby safe during a newborn photography session raleigh cary apex holly springs fuquay varina nc newborn photographersKeeping your baby safe during a newborn photography session raleigh cary apex holly springs fuquay varina nc newborn photographers

There is something so amazing to me about newborn babies.  Each one is a beautiful little miracle, a little blessing to their family.   I have been photographing newborn babies in the Raleigh area for almost 5 years now.  I take my job seriously and want to give each and every one of them the best care possible.

The babies I meet can be younger than a week old when they complete their portrait session.  Their little immune systems aren't fully developed and they can be sensitive to things that older children and adults come in contact with every day.

During all of my photography sessions, I take several precautions to make sure that your baby is kept completely safe:

1.  I am fully vaccinated.  My doctor knows that I work with newborn babies and has advised me on immunizations that are most important.  Most importantly, I stay up to date on whooping cough (pertussis) and I get a flu shot every fall.

2.  I will not conduct photography sessions if I, or anyone in my family, is sick.  If there is any chance at all that I could be ill, I will let you know and we will work to schedule a new session date.

3.  I wash my hands before every single session and use hand sanitizer during the session when needed.

4.  My studio room has a door that stays closed.  Although it's in my house, it's not a room used by my family.  The door stays closed when not in use, so that pets and children stay out.  After each use, it is thoroughly cleaned.

5.  Every single blanket, fabric, hat, outfit, and headband that touches your baby is washed immediately after the session.  I do my laundry with dye free, fragrance free soap.  Currently, I use this brand.  It's an all natural, earth friendly and chemical free soap. If anything is soiled badly, I'll usually just toss it.  Most of my props and outfits are homemade by me, so I don't mind having to do this.

6.  Safety during posing is a priority.  I'll often ask parents to help by sitting next to the baby and spotting him or her.  I often have parents help support the baby's head.  Any poses that you see on my website that look like the baby is balancing or sitting up are created by composites, meaning that in the original image, a parent is holding onto the baby so they can't tip over.  The hands are then removed in editing.  Take a look at the photo below for an example of how we accomplish this.  First, I have the mom or dad hold and support the baby's wrists and arms.  I quickly take a few pictures.  While still holding the arms, I have them use their other arm to hold the head securely.  I then have the mom or dad let go of the arms but keep their hand really close just in case more support is needed.  In that second or two while they've let go of the arms (but not the head), I take a few more shots.  In editing, I combine the left photo and the right and it lets me show the baby without any hands on him.  Pretty neat trick, eh?

7.  The baby's needs are most important.  I'll never force a baby to do something that they clearly don't want to do.  Although patience is sometimes required to help a baby settle into a pose or position, if a baby seems uncomfortable, unhappy, or needs a break to eat, I make sure that we stop what we are doing to make sure the baby receives what he or she needs.

8.  The studio is kept nice and warm.  Although it is sometimes uncomfortable for the parents and me, babies need warmth.  They cannot regulate their temperature well and are used to being in a womb...which is a toast 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit.  Keeping the studio this warm usually helps the baby sleep because they are so comfortable.

Beautiful portraiture of your newborn baby is my specialty, but safety comes first.  I will never attempt any type of pose that is not safe and secure for your baby.  If you are searching for a photographer for your baby's first portrait session, make sure that your photographer does these 8 things, at a minimum.

Are you expecting a new baby?  I would love to be your photographer!  I serve the Triangle area of North Carolina, including Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay Varina, and surrounding areas.  I strive for a simple and classic style.  If you want portraits of your baby surrounded by soft colors and neutrals, we might be a great match!  Click here and send me a message.  Let me know what questions you have about newborn photography!

{Fayetteville NC Newborn Photographer} Pretty in Pink http://www.ericacourtinephotography.com/blog/2017/7/fayetteville-nc-newborn-photographer-pretty-in-pink This adorable baby girl and her family drove up from Fayetteville to my studio outside of Raleigh for her photography session one day recently.  My studio is in Fuquay Varina, which is nicely convenient to both Raleigh and Fayetteville.  Many newborn babies sleep a lot, but this little girl was so awake and alert.  I actually loved it because for the most part, she was pretty happy, and it was nice to be able to see her eyes.  A few things can make it tricky for a photographer when a baby is wide awake:

-Newborn babies can't see well, so they don't typically make eye contact with a camera, at least not on purpose.  Usually, if they are awake, they are looking off in the distance.

-Newborn babies love to have their hands up by their face when they are awake.  It can make it hard to capture good images of the baby's face when it's being covered up by their little fist.

-Newborn babies make some really interesting facial expressions when they are awake.  Some are really cute, but sometimes they are a little awkward looking and parents don't tend to want to keep those.

This newborn baby girl, although she was awake, was very calm and content.  She was simply curious about her surroundings and didn't want to miss anything.  I loved working with her and capturing all her adorable little facial expressions.  Towards the end of her session she did eventually take a nap.  Take a look at this beautiful little baby.

{Raleigh NC Photographer} 10 Tips for Dressing for Your Fall Family Portraits http://www.ericacourtinephotography.com/blog/2017/7/-raleigh-nc-photographer-10-tips-for-dressing-for-your-fall-family-portraits Maybe it's the crazy humid heat wave we're in, but this week I've been thinking a lot about fall and Christmas.  I contacted my buddy Santa Claus to see if he would help me with some Christmas mini-sessions just for kids this November.  I've also been dreaming of the fall temperatures and beautiful fall leaves.  I've had a few families book fall sessions, so maybe that's another reason I've got fall on my mind.  In thinking of fall, I'm already brainstorming fall pictures for my own family.  I try to switch around with what time of year I have our portraits done.  It's nice to mix it up.  Last year, we did family portraits at the beach in August.  They were so beautiful, but since the boys have changed so much I'm going to have them done again.

In no particular order, here are my tips for dressing for your fall family portrait session.

1.  Check the weather.

We all know how unpredictable Raleigh weather is.  October and November can bring a huge variation of temperatures.  Some years, I've done fall mini-sessions in short sleeves.  Others, I've had to work around a layer of snow on the ground.  Of course, you don't want to wait until a few days before your session to start planning and shopping.  I always, always recommend dressing in layers because of this.  Layers are important because if it gets hot or cold, you can adjust what you are wearing to stay comfortable.

I especially recommend this for children, who react a little more to getting too cold or too hot.  Some suggestions for boys:  a thin button down collared shirt and a sweater or cute jacket to go on top.  For girls, tights, skirts, and layers with sweaters or vests look really cute.  I also love it when families bring a cute hat for their baby.  It's so easy to find a nice warm, but adorable hat to put on a baby if it gets chilly.

This family was dressed beautifully for fall family portraits.  The little boy is sporting a warm flannel shirt and a cozy red vest on top.  Mom and Dad are looking stylish too.  I loved how they didn't try to match each other.  Outfit choices like this always look great.

2.  Consider colors that pop.

Like I mentioned above, don't try too hard to make everyone match.  Not only will your family look unnatural if every single one of you is dressed in navy, but your portraits will lack interest and dimension.  Instead, pick maybe one color that everyone has a little bit of, or let everyone pick colors that are all different, yet look good together.

3.  Pinterest is Your Friend

Pinterest is such a great tool for gathering inspiration for your next family portrait session.  Need a place to get started?  Check out the board I have on my Pinterest page with lots of great ideas for outfit choices.  You can search for outfits that have bold colors, outfits that are mostly neutral, outfits that are comfortable or ones that are a tad more dressy.

4.  Treat Your Feet

Unless you are planning a shoot with a special stylized look, skip the high heels.  You'll be doing a bit of walking and to be honest, high heels look out of place in a park setting.  A better choice is boots.  Tall riding boots are comfortable and can also keep you warm if it's chilly.  Ankle boots look adorable and are a perfect pick for fall.  A pair of simple flats can also look adorable.  For kids, opt out of having them wear their school sneakers.  The neon colors on Johnny's favorite pair of running shoes just aren't something you want to look at on a giant canvas.  Loafers, boots, or a cute pair of Converse sneakers is a better choice.  For little girls, it can be too chilly for anything open toed, so choose a comfortable flat boot, flats, or more casual choice.  Men look great are easy- look for dress shoes or loafers.  If you want to try something different, rain boots or duck boots can be a really cute choice for anyone.

Fall family portraits can be a great opportunity to treat you and your family to new outfits that you feel beautiful in.  Don't hesitate to shop around and pick out new outfits that you will make you smile every time you look past the photos hanging on your walls.  Fall is just around the corner (hopefully...ha ha).  The peak time for fall portraits is from the last week in October through Veterans Day.  During these weeks, the leaves are changing and look magnificent.  Weekend afternoons book up the fastest, but I still have many open.  Spaces are limited, since the fall leaves only look nice for so long.  If you are thinking of booking a fall session for your family, it's not a good time of year to wait til the last minute.  I recommend that families book in August and September to get the date they want.  In another blog post coming up, I'll delve into my favorite locations in the Raleigh area for fall family portraits.  If you are interested in securing a photography session this fall, please email me at erica@ericacourtinephotography.com. I'd love to help you start planning your dream session!

{Raleigh NC First Birthday Cake Smash Photographer} A Birthday at Raulston Arboretum http://www.ericacourtinephotography.com/blog/2017/7/-raleigh-nc-first-birthday-cake-smash-photographer-a-birthday-at-raulston-arboretum I've been lucky enough to meet this little guy a few times over his first year of life.  The first time was last spring when he was born and I photographed his newborn portraits.  He was so adorable and fun to work with.  In the fall, I got to see him again for a fall mini session at Sugg Farm.  And most recently, we met at Raulston Arboretum to celebrate his first birthday.  We walked around the garden letting him explore, which meant picking up all sorts of rocks and twigs.  He even brought his new pillow chair from home.  Towards the end of the session, we set him down with a delicious banana flavored cake.  It's hard to tell what he liked better, the cake or his balloons.  As you can see he made quite a mess, but had a lot of fun! There was a big grassy field lined with flowers that was perfect for the cake smash.  Both the balloons and cake were a hit.  Dad was happy that some of the cake survived the cake smash because he wanted to try a little bit of the banana flavor. Luckily, there was a whole side of the cake that had gone untouched.

I love the last image where the little boy turns his back to the cake and decides that the balloons are way more fun.  For a few pictures, we ended up taking away the balloons so he was willing to give the cake a try.

When it was time to clean up, it was a little cumbersome trying to figure out the best way to clean up this messy little guy.  We had baby wipes, water, and towels on hand to get the job done.  I love these shots of Dad picking him up, blue frosting and all.  He came to the session straight from work and you can tell that he's trying his best not to get blue frosting all over his clothes.  The little boy thought is was a fun game.

I had such a fun time doing this cake smash and photography session.  Is your little boy or girl about to have their first birthday?  Unlike indoor cake smashes with overdone props, I much prefer simple cake smashes, like this one, done outdoors.  A simple blanket and set of balloons are really all you need. My first birthday sessions are not limited to only your baby.  I'm happy to do some family and sibling portraits as well, for no additional charge.   If you are interested in a photo session to celebrate a first birthday, I would be honored to help.  Email me at erica@ericacourtinephotography.com and we'll start planning your dream photography session.

{Raleigh NC Newborn Photographer} A Baby Girl In the Studio http://www.ericacourtinephotography.com/blog/2017/7/raleigh-nc-newborn-photographer-a-baby-girl-in-the-studio I had such a lovely morning recently photographing this adorable newborn baby girl recently at my studio in Fuquay Varina, just outside of Raleigh.  She brought her mommy, daddy, and big brother along.  She was such a happy baby and was so alert for the first part of the session.  She wanted to see everything that was going on.

One of my favorite parts of this session, though, was the family poses.  I love that this baby girl's mom and dad were willing to participate in some portraits with their little girl.  Maybe big brother was not quite as willing, but he did an awesome job regardless.

Her mom and dad brought some really cute Chicago Cubs props to the session.  The idea popped into my mind to use a mitt in one of the poses, so I snuck downstairs and found my husband's old baseball mitt.  I guess that's a perk of having your photography studio in your house.  Actually, my husband and kids had the day off so they were downstairs.  When my husband discovered that I was doing baseball themed images, he brought up all kinds of gear...a bat, ball, and batting helmet...none of which we got a chance to use, but it was really sweet that he found those for us.

Other than the baseball themed portraits, it was all dainty for this little girl.  She looked so pretty in pastels, like this blue and lavender. Even though it tends to be a tad easier to photograph a newborn baby when they are asleep, I always love it when I get a chance to see the eyes wide open like this.  Most babies can't really make eye contact like this.  She was so interested in what I was doing.

This wide awake behavior didn't last.  She spent most of the session doing what brand new babies do best...sleep.  She even let us put her in this cozy bucket, surrounded by soft lavender blankets.

Since it was such a pretty day we ended the morning with a few poses outdoors.  I had a plan to finally grow some beautiful flowers in my yard so I can take some newborn photos outdoors.  Unfortunately, I don't have a green thumb, so we didn't have much to work with.  Since this session, though, I've managed to grow quite a pretty bed of zinnias in my yard.

{Fuquay Varina Newborn Photographer} An adorable baby girl visits the studio http://www.ericacourtinephotography.com/blog/2017/7/-fuquay-varina-newborn-photographer-an-adorable-baby-girl-visits-the-studio This was such a fun newborn session for me!  This beautiful baby girl came to see me recently and boy was she a cutie.  With those cheeks and her head full of hair...we had a lot of fun styling her and posing her.  She was such an easy baby, too.  She barely made any fuss the entire time and was only awake for a few minutes.  She was so sleepy and comfortable and let us do all kinds of poses with her.  Her big sister was so excited to be there, and for being so little herself, she did an amazing job listening to directions.  She posed so sweetly, cuddling with her new sister and loving every moment of the special attention she got.

Aren't they so cute together?  You can already tell that they will be best friends.  I love the little coordinating dresses that they wore.
